Neonverte at Te Papa, Wellingtion, New Zealand 2003.

Neonverte by Anita Kocsis (Australia, born 1965) is a video installation based on ideas and images developed by the artist while she was building a web site that enabled her to create an 'electronic garden' on the Internet.

Initially Anita wanted to create her on-line garden based on an ordinary garden, but then became fascinated with the idea of the garden as a reflection of society. She built a web site that enabled her to create 'fantasy' plants, especially weeds. The web site could generate these weeds randomly. 'On entering the site you would never quite know which page you would get,' explains Kocsis.

She describes the site as 'a collection of flora- and fauna-based images and animations'. After Kocsis took down the website, she used the images and animations to create the Neonverte video installation.

Behind Neonverte lies Anita's concern that some children today are more comfortable being confronted by a new digital environment, such as a video game, than a new physical one, such as a hedge maze. She built this 'phantom garden' to 'create a subtle reminder of what our future children may remember a garden to be.'
